Josette Baujot was an artist and comics colorist.
She studied fine art and married in 1944. She lived in Argentina until her husband’s death in 1953, when she returned to Belgium.
She began working at Hergé Studios from 1953 as a colorist. Hergé came to appreciate her coloring, as she developed a shading style that contrasted with the sharply-defined areas of bold color that were common.
She became the defining colorist on ‘Tintin’, her style admired by many artists including Walt Disney. Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson are said to have told their crew for “The Adventures of Tintin” (2011) to hew as closely as possible to her palette.
Comics creator Jo-El Azara (born 4 May 1937) was her partner from the early 1950s, when they met at Hergé Studios.
