In 1956, Oliver's family moved to England where he discovered 'Dan Dare' in British Eagle comics. His family moved back to Switzerland after a few years but Oliver continued to read the comics. After spending six months in the Swiss army, Frey moved back to Britain and started a two-year course at the London Film School, during which he supported himself with freelance work, including illustrating War Picture Library comic books. He later drew 'The Trigan Empire' for Look and Learn and 'Dan Dare' for Eagle.
He also worked on a variety of gay erotic comics under the pen name 'Zack'.
