American author, known for "In Dubious Battle", "Of Mice and Men", "The Grapes of Wrath", "East of Eden", and "Travels with Charley". He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962. In comics, he wrote the introduction for Al Capp's "The World of Li'l Abner".
