Biography:
Robert Ament was the art critic, assistant art editor, and later for 25 years the art director/art editor for the New York World newspaper (and for 17 years art director of the Sunday edition) until it folded on February 27, 1931. He was later the editor for Comic Cuts (H L Baker, 1934 series) which was one of the first recurring comic books with new material in the United States.
Ament was also an associated editor for Everybody's Magazine (1899 series) and editor for World Man Hunters and World Adventurer (both Fiction Guild, Inc., 1934 series). Ament was also a designer of publicity pamphlets for the city of Ashbury Park, New Jersey and designer of book covers and book title pages. Robert worked as an art editor for McClure's Magazine for two years.
He served on the Board of Directors for the Traphagen of Fashion Design. Ament was a collector and authority on Chinese art. At the time of his death, he acted as an artists' agent.
Robert Ament fostered the careers of feature writer Prosper Burnelli, marine Sea Scape Artist Floyd Clymer, playwrights Sam Spewack and Belle Spewack, and cartoonists Gus Judd, Ernie Bush Miller, Bud Fisher, Leo Kauber, Gustave Tennggen, and Leon Dolice.
Ament died at the New York Post Graduate Hospital after a short illness.
